Learning First Programming — Haskell

Ugrad math kid here, so I have somewhat decent experience in Mathematics and Logic: Couple classes of Real Analysis, Point Set Topology, few Linear Algebras, couple Abstact Algebras

A friend of mine, because of this, told me as a first programming language I should learn Haskell. As according to him it’s just “abstract algebra”, he isn’t a math major, but claims the overlap is huge and is the best first language for math majors. I did some research and the language seems not that used and according to most, harder than python.

I was hoping for some insight from the math major community, is it really the best first language to learn for those with mathematical background? Is there benefit to this language and does it come easier to those who know some pure math?
